Marks of a Discipleship
(Called to Build through Discipleship)
Luke 6:39-40 ; Mat 10:24-25

  • What is Discipleship?
    • Christian discipleship is the process by which disciples grow in the Lord Jesus Christ and are equipped by the Holy Spirit, who resides in our hearts, to overcome the pressures and trials of this present life and become more and more Christlike.
    • Discipleship is a process of teaching somone to obey biblical precepts, while modeling and guiding him toward living righteously as a follower of Jesus Christ.
"DISCIPLE MAKING DISCIPLES IS THE WORK OF ALL BELIEVERS"
  • Goal of Discipleship
    • The goal of Christian discipleship should be transformational, that is, to be like Christ.

CENTRAL EMPHASIS: A disciple is not above his teacher but strives to be like his master

  •  Discipleship is built on..
    • Sound Doctrine – (to have a Firm Foundation) - Luke 6:39-40
      (Know the What - CONVICTION)
      • He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?
      • The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.
2 Tim 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
      • Principle # 1: Conviction without Sound doctrine is weak foundation
        #You can’t teach what you don’t understand
    • Steadfast Deftness – (in Facing Persecutions) - Mat 10:24-25
      (Know the How - Character)
“The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters.
If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!
      • James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
      • Rom 5:3-5 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
        • 16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues.
18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.
19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say,
20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.
22 You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
      • Matthew 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons."
      • Mat 9:34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”
      • Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
      • John 15:20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.
      • 1 Peter 2:21 says, "To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.“
      • 1Cor 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
      • Luke 22:
44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.
46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
      • Principle #2: Preparedness is essential to withstand trials, temptations and persecutions
#If you fail to prepare, then prepare to fall
    • Submissive Disposition –(For a Family-like Relation) - Mat 10:24a,Luke 6:40a
      • (Know the Who - Caring)
        • Mat 10:24a “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master.
        • Luke 6:40a The student is not above the teacher,
        • John 13:14-16 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
        • John 15:15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
        • Principle #3: Discipleship is not only about academic but also a relationship that cares.
          #No man is an island
        • Paul warned us…
1 Cor 10:12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall

Be part of a discipleship group and strive to be like our Master.

Vision: To see equipped members fulfilling the Great Commission.
